15 Most Eco-Conscious Clothing Brands In 2026

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve lived in sustainable and environmentally conscious clothing for over a decade — these are our favorite brands that use clean, natural materials.

When we think of pollution, we think of big oil companies and smog from coal mines — but the truth is, fast fashion is one of the central polluting industries in the world. Not only is excessive clothing production harmful to our planet, but garment production harms farmers and producers due to chemicals and waste.

Thankfully, there are many eco-friendly clothing brands utilizing sustainable production methods. These brands use low-impact dyes, upcycled natural materials, and organic cotton to create the very best sustainable and organic apparel.

Why should you choose environmentally friendly clothing?

Opting to invest in environmentally friendly clothing means we’re reducing the detrimental health and environmental impacts of fast fashion. Conventional fabrics are often treated with pesticides, synthetic dyes, and chemicals, which can linger in the fabric and cause skin irritation, allergies, or even more serious health problems when absorbed into the skin. In contrast, eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp are generally free from these toxic substances and can help reduce any harmful exposure to farmers, garment workers — and in turn, us.

From an environmental perspective, sustainable clothing choices help conserve resources and reduce pollution. The production of eco-friendly fabrics often requires less water, energy, and pesticides compared to conventional textiles. By choosing sustainably produced clothing, you’ll support practices that reduce carbon emissions, limit waste, and protect ecosystems. Environmentally conscious fashion also encourages recycling and upcycling, contributing to a circular economy that minimizes landfill waste and promotes a more sustainable future for our planet.

What is slow fashion?

Slow fashion is a movement that invites us to rethink our relationship with clothing, encouraging us to buy less, choose well, and truly cherish each piece for years — if not decades — to come. Unlike fast fashion, which churns out cheap, trend-driven styles meant to be worn a handful of times and tossed, slow fashion focuses on quality over quantity. It champions thoughtful design, high-quality natural or recycled materials, and meticulous craftsmanship, often through small-batch production or made-to-order pieces that reduce excess inventory and waste. Brands committed to slow fashion also prioritize ethical practices, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for garment workers. By investing in timeless styles and well-made staples, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also cultivate a deeper connection to our clothes — transforming them from disposable items into meaningful, long-lasting pieces that reflect our personal values and style.

What are the most eco-friendly clothing materials?

When it comes to building a wardrobe that’s kind to both people and the planet, choosing the right materials makes all the difference. The most eco-friendly clothing fabrics are those that are renewable, low-impact, and biodegradable, like organic cotton, which is grown without harmful pesticides and uses far less water than conventional cotton. Linen and hemp are standout choices — both require minimal water and chemicals, grow quickly, and naturally enrich the soil. Innovative options like TENCEL™ lyocell, made from sustainably sourced wood pulp in a closed-loop process, offer a silky-soft alternative with a much smaller footprint than traditional synthetics. Recycled fibers, such as recycled cotton or polyester made from plastic bottles (rPET), give new life to existing materials and help reduce waste. By choosing these thoughtfully sourced and produced fabrics, you’re not just investing in beautiful clothes — you’re supporting a more sustainable, circular fashion system that puts the environment first.

What are the relevant certifications?

When shopping for sustainable and eco-friendly clothing, it can be hard to know which claims to trust — that’s where third-party certifications come in. These labels help you cut through greenwashing and ensure that the fabrics and production processes truly meet high environmental and ethical standards.

Some key certifications to look for include:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This certification that the clothing textiles are made from at least 70% organic fibers and produced in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Ensures that every component of the garment, from threads to buttons, has been tested for harmful substances and is safe for human health.
  • Fair Trade Certified™: Guarantees that the people making your clothes are paid fair wages and work under safe, ethical conditions.
  • Bluesign®: Focuses on reducing harmful chemicals and resource use throughout the entire textile supply chain.

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally worn and researched sustainable fashion for years. We’ve tested all the brands on this list based on their quality and certifications so you can be sure they’re environmentally friendly, nontoxic, and ethically made. We add new favorites to this list regularly when they meet the following criteria.

  • ECO-FRIENDLY | These brands use garment production practices that minimize environmental impact, including the use of recycled materials. You won’t find any harmful chemicals, excessive waste, or microplastic shedding here.
  • NATURAL & NONTOXIC | All of these options are safe for daily wear and wash since they use natural and organic fabrics that are not treated with harsh chemicals. We’ve noted relevant certifications like GOTS so you can be sure we’ve got your back.
  • SUSTAINABLE | The brands on this list are mindful of labor conditions of the farmers and garment workers who made these pieces — and many are fair trade certified.

It can feel overwhelming to try to break a fast fashion habit, but making the switch to eco-friendly clothing doesn’t have to happen over night. Start small, keeping these environmentally friendly clothing brands in mind for the next time you get the itch to update your closet.

99 Sustainable Clothing Brands By Budget (2024)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and lived in sustainable fashion for a decade — these are our top 99 fair trade and eco-friendly clothing brands organized by budget.

As we’ve become more conscious about our purchases, we often wonder: Who makes the clothes we wear every day and in what kind of conditions? Documentaries like “The True Cost” shine a light on how the fast fashion industry depletes the earth’s resources and leverages labor to pass on a “cheap” cost to the end consumer. Meaning, our spending — and non-spending — can either help or work against the people and resources involved in the making of our clothing. Choosing to shop sustainable, and even better secondhand, can lessen the drastic impact that fast fashion has on our planet.

Why wear sustainable clothing?

If you’re new to shopping for sustainable fashion, you may be surprised by the price tags — but it’s important to understand these brands are not designed to be consumed at the same rate as fast fashion. Instead, these sustainable fashion brands prioritize eco-friendly practices, ethical production standards, timeless design, and high-quality essentials that never go out of style. Being timeless and well-made means that you can wear these pieces for years longer than fast fashion that requires replacing every season.

So when we do need to update our wardrobes, we turn to slow fashion brands like the 99 sustainable fashion brands listed below. Each fashion brand has made it a central part of its mission to approach garment production in an ethical and transparent way that considers both people and the planet. Many of these ethical clothing brands come with third-party sustainable and ethical certifications as well.

Our criteria:

Our editors have worn, researched, and tested sustainable clothing for the past ten years. These are 99 brands that meet our rigorous qualifications outlined below. Note that we update this list frequently with emerging favorites so check back!

  • ETHICAL PRACTICES | These sustainable clothing brands adhere to ethical and responsible labor practices, ensuring their employees receive fair wages and have safe working environments. We’ve also included clothing brands that give back to their communities and prioritize size inclusivity in their clothing lines.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY/SUSTAINABLE | Each of these ethical clothing brands practices sustainability throughout their manufacturing process, including using all natural and organic materials, low impact processes, and recycled/upcycled materials in their pieces where possible.
  • DESIGN | Fromchic going-out wear and everyday casual wear, to kids clothes and outerwear gear, we’ve compiled the best sustainable clothing designs for every possible occasion and need.
  • AFFORDABLE | While sustainable fashion can be on the pricey end, we’ve made the effort to organize this list of our favorite 99 brands by budget, so you can find the pieces you’re looking for at a cost that works for you. Our top 29 on this list are the most cost-effective choices!

For more sustainable clothing, you can check out our guides to responsibly made shoessustainable underwear, and even ethically-made handbags.

And remember: We don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe all at once. To create a more sustainable wardrobe, we can simply start with what we have, mend pieces we love most, and build our closets out slowly and intentionally.

A report has shown there’s “massive potential” and “significant demand” in the next-gen materials industry.

  • New innovations using next-gen and bio-based materials are expected to replace animal or fossil-fuel-based textiles in the fashion industry.
  • Material Innovations Initiative (MII) has released a report offering insights into the mercurial landscape of next-gen materials, outlined below.

If recent coverage is any indicator, this year’s must-have fashion trends will feature next-gen and bio-based materials.

Designed to replace animal- or fossil-fuel-based textiles, these innovations are sourced from a range of materials such as mushrooms and coffee grounds, leveraging technologies from precision fermentation to tissue engineering, and finding their way into sneakersleggings and handbags, to name just a few game-changing applications.

Everyone and their uncle has been announcing new products and partnerships with these materials front and center, including Old NavyLululemonNikePatagoniaCrocsRalph Lauren — the list goes on and on.

To help us break down the buzz, Material Innovations Initiative (MII) released a report offering a window into the mercurial landscape of next-gen materials. Here’s a quick glimpse into the state of the market.

Investment in a growing opportunity

As the report outlines, there’s “massive potential” and “significant demand” in the next-gen materials industry. Roughly 75 innovators make up the market, and since 2015, they’ve seen more than $1.29 billion in investments, nearly 40 percent of which was raised in 2020 alone.

If that kind of momentum weren’t impressive enough, here’s another eye-grabbing announcement: Less than a month ago, Spiber — a company using precision fermentation to create a silk alternative, and the top funded next-gen material innovator to date — secured a $312 million investment adding to a grand total of $910.9 million raised.

“We need significant investments, partnerships and more material companies and scientists tackling the issues facing the industry.”

This ramp up in investment has come in the wake of shifting consumer demands, technological advancements and an ever-increasing landscape of sustainability commitments in the fashion industry. And all this points to more growth on the horizon — according to MII, the market could see a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 80 percent over the next five years.

12 Materials Of The Future That Could Change The Face Of Fashion

David ABRAHAMS

Given that the production and processing of materials makes up the majority of fashion’s carbon footprint, it’s no wonder there has been a renewed focus on textile innovation across the industry of late. Just this year, we’ve seen Stella McCartney launch its first bag made from Mylo, an alternative leather made from mushroom roots; Zara unveil its first products made from LanzaTech’s carbon-capturing material; and Gucci-owner Kering investing in lab-grown leather start-up VitroLabs.

It’s a welcome development for Nina Marenzi, founder of the Future Fabrics Expo, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. “Ten years ago, it was just not understood why there was a need in the first place to have materials that have a lower environmental impact,” she tells Vogue. “[Now] it’s become very clear that unless you really are involved in these discussions [and] trying to establish these partnerships, you’re going to be left behind.”

Finding an alternative to traditional leather is one area that’s seen a large amount of innovation, given that the cattle industry as a whole is responsible for an estimated 14.5 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Among the frontrunners are mycelium-based materials, such as Mylo and MycoWorks, alongside plastic-free alternatives such as Mirum. “We’ve always said that if you move away from leather, you have to really look at what you are replacing it with,” Marenzi says. “And if you’re replacing it with plastic, that’s not right.”
